Together we are stronger. Thank you, Dash Nation!

I’m not sure if you noticed, but it’s been a wild ride for the 36 Dash Dash Nation DFO (Dash Funded Organization) 2018-2019 proposal. After a tumultuous voting cycle, the Dash network voted for us to continue our work providing and maintaining fair and respectful forums for our community to enjoy.

We are very proud of our role in procuring engagement for the Dash DAO, with a current cycle-high 1615 votes cast. We realize that because of the nature of our work, we are constantly in the spotlight, and because we are community-oriented there are a lot of opinions on how we handle our work.

Brian Davis has been a great addition to the Dash Nation DFO Media team.

For the benefit of masternode owners and community members alike, I would like to reiterate the Dash Nation DFO mission statement:

“Professionalism, progress, optimism and respect. These are the founding values which Dash Nation represents. Building a positive environment is key when you are trying to educate ordinary people about a cutting edge technology like Dash. Yes, it can be complex and intimidating. That’s why Dash Nation members embody these values, to foster a great communication and learning environment. From our moderation division committed to moderating in an fair and respectful way, to our media division, representing Dash with pride, we all perform our jobs with these standards in mind. Our job is to help Dash put its best face forward by creating an atmosphere around it where everyone can enjoy themselves in peace, and promoting Dash through shows and interviews on YouTube. The combined effect of these initiatives is to create an environment which is not only pleasing to community members, but also attractive to newcomers. The Dash community deserves that.”

We believe that it’s important for the Dash community to have fairly-moderated, respectful and inclusive forums. There are many reasons for this. We are being watched in our interactions, and a community that engages in discourse respectfully, debating facts, and allowing different viewpoints to be heard will fare better than competitors. Also, this type of environment will lead to more progress, as people are free to disagree and push for possibly needed change without fear of being banished for not agreeing with the majority. Echo chambers will not help us to move forward as an organization.

Shout out to the YES vote

The team and I would like to express our heart-felt gratitude for the support that you have shown us. We do not take the responsibility that you’ve given us lightly, and we will continue to do our work to the best of our ability. From the moderation team to the media division, we will maintain our inclusive and fair forums and represent Dash with professionalism. We will continue to draw on our skills in customer service and organization to interact with community members, and lead by example for the benefit of Dash.

The Dash Nation DFO believes in fair and open forums, free of biases.

We hear the NO votes as well

Although in a minority, there are quite a few individuals in the Dash DAO who don’t believe that we are worth our small Dash ask of the network. We hear your votes as well, and will work hard to earn your vote.

I would like to take an opportunity to address some of the criticisms that we have encountered that may have led people to vote NO for our proposal:

  • Dash Nation has a bias for certain proposals or against certain others.
This is absolutely not the case, and runs counter to everything that we as an organization stands for. We strongly believe that for Dash to realize its true potential, a truly dynamic communication environment is needed. As such, all parties should feel that their opinions or advice will be heard. Plainly put, the Dash Nation DFO’s only loyalty is to the entire Dash network. A vote for us is a vote for fairness. We are not partial to any proposal owners, not even the Dash Core Group. Please do not believe any individuals that attempt to convince you otherwise, without facts to back it up.
  • There is a “two tier” moderation system in our moderated forums. This is an understandable complaint that we sometimes see, but it results from a lack of complete information. When one of our moderators deals with an issue involving two or more people, the parties involved often only see the actions taken against them. They do not see the actions that were taken against the others. This sometimes leads people to think that the team favors one individual over the other. Rest assured, when it comes to rule infractions, the team is handling them, and documenting them with our escalation procedure. No one is immune from this. The stakes for getting it right are too high.
  • The Dash Nation on Discord is a “sh*tshow”.
This is also understandable, and our response to this can be summed up well by Dash Nation DFO member Arthyron:
“Well, one thing I’ve noticed doing a lot of security and moderator work, is that people have different ideas about what constitutes good performance in that capacity. I think it’s clear from the way that *** moderates their forum that the general consensus there is that “good moderation” ensures a relatively peaceful atmosphere, little controversy or flared emotions. Which is fine when everyone is on the same page ideologically, it’s the person acting out that gets the boot, but I don’t think that environment is optimal just because it’s more low key. Controversy on matters of voting and funding should absolutely be allowed, minimized of course to what is necessary, reasonable and functional to facilitate the best pragmatic outcomes. I think we (do) a good job being objective in how we (apply) and enforce the rules over all. But in a system and from the perspective of people with a different take on what good moderation looks like, objectivity looks like irresponsibility.”
In Dash Nation on Discord, lots of different viewpoints and personalities are tolerated within the rules, and that leads to some colorful commentary from time to time. It may not always be pretty, but all sides will be allowed to be heard to determine the best course of action in any given situation. The Dash network deserves that.
  • The #storm and #coffee-bar channels are populated with leeches that don’t care about Dash, only tips.
To the outsider, I could certainly see it appears that way. However, this is an important tool to encourage newcomers to enter the community and stick around. You will obviously get some that simply stay for tips, no avoiding that. However, in the time that we’ve been doing storms and encouraging posting in the coffee-bar, we have seen more multiculturalism in Dash Nation (a strong Filipino contingent), a few more dedicated community members than we would have had previously, and a youth movement helping to spread Dash news with the “Pink Panthers”, Dash Nation’s social media squad. The “Pink Panthers” are used by other organizations as well, such as Dash Force and the Dash Core Group, indicating that they are proving their usefulness. None of this would be happening without the draw that these two channels provide. For the relatively low spend (~$25 per storm), it’s pretty hard to complain about. The atmosphere of positivity and inclusiveness it creates is just another bonus, and this is what we value in Dash Nation.
  • Tao is greedy. He gets paid too much money for a part-time job, and pays his overworked moderators peanuts.
I’m an honest man, and if I did not believe that I wasn’t providing value for my compensation, I would not be doing it. To be honest, I’m working for less than I budgeted for with the decline of Dash value during this term and last. However, I have not said a word about that because Dash is Dash, and I will enjoy rises in the value at times as well. The Dash Nation DFO serves the network, and as such, we believe that Dash is king. All payments to staff are made in Dash. For me, this is a full-time job. I have cut my hours at the casino to minimum to maintain my benefits, and dedicate all my remaining working time to organizing, moderating, and communicating with community members in various capacities. My moderators and media personalities have no fixed schedule, and they are all part-time. Honest pay for honest work, and that is what is happening in our organization, with complete transparency.
Reaching out to newbies is important to the progress of Dash.

The Dash Nation DFO is proud to serve the Dash network. We are very excited about the technological, financial, and social trailblazing that is the Dash DAO. Please continue to support us as we help the community get the absolute most out of our potential.

Onwards and upwards,

Tao Of Satoshi

Dash community: Looking for talent for DashNation.com!

One of the founding principles of the Dash Nation movement is that anyone can contribute. Each person has their individual strengths, and they can use these strengths to help grow the Dash ecosystem or help others. As more and more people begin to contribute in the best way they can, we can grow this revolutionary monetary, technological and social project to its full potential that much faster.

As the Dash Nation movement continues to grow (Dash Nation on Discord recently surpassed 8,000 members), we now have more community members to provide talent for grassroots projects. One of those grassroots projects is this website.

The vision for Dash Nation is in the website

When I began the concept of this website, it was to provide a portal for information about Dash and its community. I didn’t (and still don’t) have that much skill with web design, so I had to rely heavily on a former community member to help out.

DashNation.com lay dormant for a good long time, as I concentrated my efforts on moderation in Dash Nation Slack, followed by Dash Nation on Discord. Recently, though, myself and some others have been breathing life back into it, and are ready to take the next step.

As this site is what I consider a grassroots website, made by the Dash community for the Dash community, we would like to take it to the next level. But, to make it thrive and help attract newcomers to Dash, we will need your help. If your Dash Nation strength lies in web design, writing, video creating, graphics, or anything else pertaining to making a website that would be the envy of other cryptos, we want to hear from you!

The Dash Nation movement: Grassroots efforts to grow the Dash project.

Details, Tao, details…

Recently, we made the first steps to expand this website to other community members. I approached a web designer who is willing to help use his strength to modernize the site. We also began attracting talent in other languages. Criptoneros, which is a blog, and Criptomundo, which will be a latin Dash YouTube channel will combine to bring content to Dash Nation in Spanish.

We would love to make this site top-notch. We realize it may take time to get there, but we are confident that there are some in the community who may have the Dash Nation strengths needed to help out here. So, here are the aspects we are looking for. Please ask yourself if you have the skills to help out:

  • Web design: Do you have an idea that will modernize this site and create an atmosphere that will keep people coming back?
  • Content creators: No website is high-quality without interesting content. There is enough brain power in Dash Nation to have a very interesting website, with lots of different viewpoints, languages and styles for vibrant reading or viewing. Writers, video makers and bloggers will be needed.
  • Graphic design and artists: This is something that sometimes doesn’t get enough credit. Art is something that speaks to the viewer and tells them something about Dash Nation and its people sometimes more than words. These will be needed as well.
Content makes the website. Do you have any content creation skills?

Want to help work with Dash Nation to grow Dash Nation? Apply within.

There will be a small reward (in Dash) for each contribution made to the site. It won’t make you rich, though, so you should help out because you want to see the Dash Nation project succeed. If you feel that you may have what it takes to fill these positions, please contact me (Tao Of Satoshi) in the following ways:

  • Email me at tao@dashnation.com.
  • PM me (@Tao Of Satoshi#9999) on Dash Nation on Discord (Invite link here)
  • Contact me on Reddit: (u/TaoOfSatoshi)
  • Contact me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Dash_Nation
  • Contact me on BCT: (TaoOfSaatoshi)

Looking forward to hearing from you! If we can harness and focus the talents of Dash Nation, we will build a community site that rivals or even surpasses the official one. This will be an exciting project, that will be very rewarding.

Onwards and upwards, Dash Nation! Let’s get to work.

Dash Nation on Discord reaches 8,000 members!

Dash and its community has really grown from their humble beginnings. The journey started with the ANN thread on BitcoinTalk, and the IRC channel. While some used IRC, that popular BCT thread (the most viewed thread on the website) used to be the only communication channel for the less technical-minded in the community.

Just like using Dash, talking about Dash gained in popularity. The Dash Forum was created, offering another, larger outlet for Dash ideas. Dashpay subreddit was created, adding another style of communication to the ecosystem. Growth was apparent every time a new forum was created.

Dash Forum is an important communication tool for the Dash community.

Then Slack became a popular platform for communication for cryptocurrencies. A Dash community Slack channel was created, and ran for awhile. Personnel problems led to the demise of this channel, and that’s the first appearance of the entity known as Dash Nation.

Dash Nation Slack

Fleeing the problems of the original Dash Chat Slack, the community settled into the Dash Nation Slack channel. An atmosphere of inclusiveness, respect, and positivity was created and encouraged. All was going well, however cracks began to appear in the platform itself, and its ability to handle open communities. Moderation tools were weak at best, and crypto communities were not allowed to accept any further members.

Dash Nation stands for respect, inclusiveness, and progress. It provides the environment needed for Dash to thrive.

Dash Nation on Discord

That was not an acceptable situation. A community that seeks to include the entire world (mass adoption) could not allow a platform to stifle accepting new members. After researching alternatives, it was determined that Slack-alternative Discord offered the best environment to nurture the community and promote results.

After leaving Slack with a membership of approximately 2.5k, we started Dash Nation on Discord. It took awhile to gain our membership back. We continued to provide a semi-professional atmosphere for ideas and productivity to thrive. A little over a year later we now have surpassed 8,000 members!

On Twitter? Help Dash Nation celebrate!

It gives us great pleasure to be the premier place for Dash online communication and collaboration. Our success is Dash’s success, and everyone is welcome. We look forward to many more members of Dash Nation working hard to make Dash the currency of choice for global finance.

Dash Nation DFO 2018 Year-end update and future plans

As 2018 draws to a close, the Dash Nation DFO (Dash-funded organization) would like to thank the community for its continued support. We would also like to give you an update on how everything is going, and how we are planning to provide even more value for the network.

The largest focus of the Dash Nation DFO is the community experience. We believe in the need for positive, respectful, and welcoming community forums. To that end, we have created and maintained an atmosphere of decorum where no one feels threatened by another. This was no easy feat, and the moderation members of the team should be commended for the excellent job they have done.

Distinction between moderation and censorship

Often, when a member of the team disciplines a forum user, the user cries “censorship”. This is usually because the user feels that they should be able to either attack others or spread an unproven narrative. As long-time community members know, such behavior has led to grave consequences. The failed Dash Chat Slack broke up because a false narrative led to a call to fork Dash. This led our team to take action.

Starting with Dash Nation on Discord, and expanding to the Dashpay subreddit and Dash Forum by request, we have implemented and enforced our simple rules. The rule against attacking another user is self-explanatory. The “speculation as fact” rule simply means that any unproven narratives must be presented as an opinion. All Dash forums have been rendered friendlier and more respectful as a result of our work.

Thanks for the support, Dash Nation!

It is our pleasure to provide you with an update of the status of the three forums moderated by our team:

Dash Nation on Discord

Dash’s premier place for online communication and collaboration continues to provide a nurturing environment for the community. The biggest problem we encounter there is spam at the moment. So, the plan for dealing with spammers is to increase the entry security level. The highest security level is to require a verified phone number to join. We have been hesitating to implement this, though, due to the fact we would like Dash Nation to be as open as possible. Dash Nation on Discord currently boasts almost 8,000 members.

The team has started a couple of initiatives on Dash Nation on Discord during the current contract term. The first is the #storm channel. This channel is very popular among users of DND. There is always lots of conversation and bonding happening during a storm. The second is the Dash Nation Social Media Squad. These social-media-minded people help spread the word about Dash accomplishments to their followers. As this team grows, the reach of our news should grow as well, leading to increased network effect.

Other groups, such as Dash Core and Dash Force, have started to use the “Pink Panthers” to spread the news that they wish to share. I know that they will become a very important part of the Dash Nation movement in the future.

Dashpay Subreddit

The Dash Nation DFO team, along with other moderators, has done a great job with r/Dashpay. Everyone’s combined efforts have led to a very nice place to converse about Dash. A special shout-out has to be made to @macrochip, who figured out how to migrate Dash’s sidebar to the new version of Reddit. It looks fantastic. We look forward to more collaboration in the New Year.

Dash Forum

The Dash Forum is the least used of the three major forums. It did not take much effort to make a great environment there among legitimate users. However, the spam problem exists here as well, with threads about weight loss and supplements having to be deleted constantly. We will continue to monitor Dash Forum as agreed in our contract.

Dash Nation DFO Media

Although our focus is on moderation, we also have a media division that represents the values of Dash Nation with pride. Shows such as Cash Alternative TV, Dash Decentral and the upcoming Criptomundo show Dash in a positive light.

We purposely structured the media division to be on a “per episode” basis, meaning that if a show was not provided, no money would be spent. Any leftover funds would be rolled over to the next month, and ultimately the next contract.

Brian Davis was to receive a payment for each episode that he performed. Unfortunately, though, the format of his show, Dash Decentral, depends a lot on community input. This show did not receive a variety of submissions as we had hoped, so we placed it on hiatus. As a result, we have not spent any funds from the budget for Dash Decentral.

Our future plans

The Dash Nation DFO plans on continuing to do the things that are working, and finding solutions to those that are not. As such, we will continue to provide a strong moderation presence to the three forums, and we will continue to engage the community with our engagement budget. Dash Decentral will not be continuing for the foreseeable future. Brian Davis will join Cash Alternative TV as a co-host, and will earn his payments with episodes of CATV instead of Dash Decentral.

The teamwork we are enjoying on Reddit will continue, and we will look for ways to improve the experience there. Dash Forum needs some work with the Marketplace section, so we will do our part to recommend changes to the administrators.

The biggest new initiative that we will undertake in 2019 is to make DashNation.com a fully functional site, with Dash information, advice for community members, a lineup of authors and artists, and media pages. We will begin recruiting for this shortly, and are excited to make this website a bigger part of the Dash ecosystem.

2019 should be a great year for Dash!

Closing thoughts

Thanks again for your support in our latest contract. It’s a pleasure to provide our services for the network we love so much. Together, we will achieve great things in 2019. Cheers to you all.

How Dash can “Make Crypto Great Again”

2018 has been a dark time for the digital currency space. The prevalence of ego-driven politics, greed-driven scams, and technological inadequacies of the market leader have led to a punishing series of price declines that have lasted the whole year. December has been particularly rough, with the bottom looking to be in sight but not quite, as another big selloff lurked around the corner.

Whatever you think is responsible for this arduous financial experience, it is clear that the time has come for a paradigm shift in this space. Bitcoin has had ample opportunity as the leader to actually lead. What it has done with this opportunity is fight for years over block size, fork into many different Bitcoins due to the inability to come to consensus any other way, and fail to keep pace with other innovators in the space, such as Dash. Bitcoin has failed in its position as a market leader, the example other projects in the space need to look up to.

An initial visual of a potential “Make Crypto Great Again” Dash marketing campaign.

Dash is a digital currency that simply works

Ever since Dash was founded in 2014, the project has been a marvel of development, teamwork, and effort. A cursory glance at the original forum, the BTC ANN thread reveals a battle-tested group of digital currency enthusiasts working on code, fighting trolls, and engaging with newcomers who were curious about Dash.

As time went on, this ethos became more and more ingrained in Dash Nation culture. The values of respect, professionalism, and inclusiveness are pillars of our community from Zimbabwe to Vietnam to Canada. With forums such as Dash Nation on Discord encouraging healthy discourse, Dash flourished, both in development and in worldwide adoption. The result of this was a very-well functioning product and enthusiastic team willing to do what it takes to see Dash as worldwide payment system.

A mock-up of a “Make Crypto Great Again” campaign cap.

The silence has been deafening

For reasons that I outlined in yesterday’s article, Dash has had a rough ride surrounding its marketing. The difference between Dash’s accomplishments and innovations, and the way it is treated in the industry is a chasm. Attempts to post our good news in traditional crypto outlets is met with skepticism to outright hostility. We could just accept this as the way it will always be, but we would not be doing all of our hard work justice if we did.

Dash has what it takes to be a market leader

Today, on the Dash Nation on Discord server, we were talking about the fun days of 2017’s crypto bull run. We then discussed the deterioration in the space in 2018 and the confidence in Dash of one of the users slipped out. He said that Dash would make crypto great again. Little did he know that that comment would inspire a campaign that seems tailor-made for Dash: The #MakeCryptoGreatAgain campaign.

Why is this campaign tailor-made for Dash? Well, there are several reasons, actually, and I will list them here:

  • The crypto industry’s investors have been beaten and bruised in this brutal market, and those that are left behind may be looking for a project that deserves their trust.
  • Dash’s accomplishments in 2018 in the areas of technology and adoption worldwide are eclipsing most projects in the space. It has quietly led by example. But no longer, because…
  • Dash could stand to have more swagger. There are very few things wrong with our project, and we have an incredible, hard working community. We need to confidently sing the praises of Dash, and instill wonder in those we discuss Dash with.
Another mock-up of a “Make Crypto Great Again” cap.

Why “Make Crypto Great Again”?

This campaign is brilliant in its simple message, but also very controversial, due to the similarities to the Donald Trump 2016 United States presidential run slogan “Make America Great Again”. The result is whether you love it or hate it, it will get your attention. Dash has never had such an “in your face” type of marketing before, and now would be the perfect time to try it.

The thing with Donald Trump’s campaign, he used the slogan, but he has been proven to not have the goods to back up his promises. Dash, in contrast, does have the goods. When we say that Dash can make crypto great again, we mean it. Dash has the tech and the community to be a leader in the space. We just need to get that word out there. Sometimes you need to try a bolder strategy.

The #MakeCryptoGreatAgain campaign would feature hashtag usage, instagram pictures, merchandise for in-person meetups (blockchain conferences would be the perfect place to distribute them) such as T-shirts and caps, stickers, fridge magnets and whatever else we can come up with. It’s not a done deal, so further discussion is welcomed.

Be bold, Dash Nation. Make Crypto Great Again. Dash.
